Dumfries Cricket ClubDumfries Cricket Club is a long established club which was founded in 1853. It is located a mile to the north of the town centre on the east side of the River Nith on the Nunholm Road. The club are founder members of the Dumfries Sports Club, created in 1977, with the building of a new clubhouse at the Nunholm ground. This club now comprises of cricket, squash, tennis, hockey and running clubs, with club membership offering use of the 4 squash courts, 4 floodlight all-weather tennis courts, multiple changing rooms, a gym, bar, events lounge and inside and outside balconies from which to view the cricket. The club runs two Saturday and Sundays sides as well as two mid-week teams that play in an evening league on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Firsts and Seconds league matches are normally played on Saturdays. Regular junior coaching is provided from qualified club coaches and games range from the under 10s up through the age groups. The first eleven (known as APD Dumfries) play in the Scottish National Cricket League (SNCL) and in 2009 remain in Division 2. This is across Scotland and only Division 1 is between this league and Scotland's Premier League and those playing for the Scottish Saltires. The second eleven (known as JMS Nunholm) play in the Western District Cricket Union (WDCU) which feeds in to the SNCL. In 2009 the club have retained their place in Division 2. The ground had the status of Scotland's top ground in 2006 with the club, in the form of Convenor, Davy Davidson, and Groundsman, Raymond Murray, being awarded top amateur groundsman. The facility of an excellent square is supplemented with an artificial pitch, four sightscreens, three mobile covers, three lane all-weather nets, a new machinery storage building, and, most essentially, a scoreboard building visible from the bar. The club is always keen to welcome new members, senior, junior, or just those keen to to watch some cricket. |
